Spen Valley is home to Olympic cyclist Lisa Brambini, who has lived in the village of Hartshead since the age of nine months. Four times national road race champion and twice national 10-mile time champion, she represented Great Britain at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. She won a Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland in 1990. Lisa's daughter Laura has followed her mother's talented example as a promising national cycle racer.
