Spen Way Heritage Trail is a 21 mile circular walking trail around Spen Valley West Yorkshire through countryside, parkland and urban roads. It was created by Cleckheaton & District Rotary Club in 2000 as a Millenium project. It starts at Rawfolds Park (on the A638 Dewsbury-Bradford road between Cleckheaton & Heckmondwike) and passes through surrounding villages of Roberttown, Hartshead, Clifton, Scholes, Oakenshaw, Hunsworth, Birkenshaw and Gomersal. It highlights the architectural and cultural legacy of the woollen trade and the later industrial revolution. It includes fine yeomen's houses, churches, pubs, Luddite and Quaker sites, and Charlotte Bronte's friends' houses, which later featured in her novels.
The Trail Booklet costs £3. It can be bought at Spen Stationers, Market Building, Albion Street Cleckheaton, by post (send a cheque for £3 payable to "The Rotary Club of Cleckheaton & District" plus a self-addressed A5 envelope with normal postage stamp on it to Mr Paul Merrick, 2 Turnstead Avenue Cleckheaton BD19 3AJ) or see details at the Long Distance Walkers Association whose members can download electronic versions of the Trail.
