Spen Valley is perfect for walking, whether you're a hiker, an "ambler" or just want to nosey around a fascinating area. We have miles of footpaths- through snickets & ginnels in town and village, and through fields & woods in Spen Valley's countryside. And all the while, you're not too far away from refreshments or a bus route. See our suggestions for walks and tell us about good walks you've discovered, or about things that could be improved.
Hartshead Church is a destination on this walk from Windybank which passes Thornbush Farm, now in a poor state but in 1811 the lodgings of Patrick Bronte when he was curate at the church. At Hartshead Church you can see for miles and understand why the church was built here. Beyond the church the route takes you through fields along an ancient "green lane" and past the Quaker Burial Ground which dates from 1655, when Quakers were forbidden burial in church graveyards.
